How to Become a Home Health Care Nurse

Home Health Care Nursing Information and Overview

Home health care is allowing the patient and their family to maintain dignity and independence. According to the National Association for Home Care, there are more than 7 million individuals in the United States in need of home health care nurse services because of acute illness, long term health problems, permanent disability or terminal illness.

Home Health Care Basics

Nurses practice in a number of venues: Hospital settings, nursing homes, assisted living centers, and home health care. Home health care nursing is a growing phenomenon as more patients and their families desire to receive care in their homes. The history of home health care stems from Public Health Nursing where public health nurses made home visits to promote health education and provide treatment as part of community outreach programs. Today academic programs train nurses in home care and agencies place home health care nurses with ailing individuals and their families depending on the nurse's experience and qualifications. In many cases there is a shared relationship between the agency and the academic institution.

Many changes have taken place in the area of home health care. These include Medicare and Medicaid, and Long Term Care insurance reimbursement and documentation. It is important for the nurse and nursing agency to be aware of the many factors involved for these rules and regulations resulting from these organizations. Population and demographic changes are taking place as well. Baby boomers approaching retirement and will present new challenges for the home health care industry. Technology and medical care in hospitals has lead to shorter inpatient stay and more at-home rehabilitation. Increases in medical outpatient procedures are also taking place with follow-up home care. This has resulted in the decrease of mortality rate from these technologies and medical care has lead to increases in morbidity and chronic illness that makes the need for home health care nursing a greater priority.

Home Health Care Nurse Job Description

Through an array of skills and experience, home health care nurses specialize in a wide range of treatments; emotional support, education of patients who are recovering from illnesses and injury for young children and adults, to women who have experienced recent childbirth, to the elderly who need palliative care for chronic illness.

A practicing nurse must have the skills to provide care in a unique setting such as someone's home. The nurse is working with the patient and the family and must understand the communication skills for such dynamics. Rapport is evident in all nursing positions, but working in a patient's own living space needs a different level of skill and understanding. There is autonomous decision making as the nurse is no longer working as a team with other nurses in a structured environment, but is now as a member of the "family" team. The host family has cultural values that are important and are different for every patient and must be treated with extreme sensitivity. Other skills include critical thinking, coordination, assessment, communication, and documentation.

Home health care nurses also specialize in the care of children with disabilities that requires additional skills such as patience and understanding of the needs of the family. Children are living with disabilities today that would have resulted in mortality just twenty years ago. Genetic disorders, congenital physical impairments, and injury are just a few. Many families are familiar with managing the needs of the child, but still need expert care that only a home health care nurse can provide. It is important that a home health care nurse is aware of the expertise of the family about the child's condition for proper care of the child. There are many complexities involved, but most important, a positive attitude and positive reinforcement is of utmost importance for the development of the child.

Medication coordination between the home health care nurse, doctor, and pharmacist, ensures proper management of the exact science behind giving the patient the correct dose, time of administration, and combinations. Home health care nurses should be familiar with pharmacology and taught in training about different medications used by patients in the clinical setting.

Many advanced practicing nurses are familiar with medication regiments. They have completed graduate level programs. Home health care agencies believe that a nurse should have at least one year of clinical experience before entering home health care. Advanced practicing nurses can expedite that training by helping new nurses understand the home health care market and teaching.

Employment and Salary

According to the United States Department of Labor, there were 2.4 million nurses in America, the largest healthcare occupation, yet many academic and hospital organizations believe there is a gross shortage in nursing staff. The shortage of nurses was 6% in 2000 and is expected to be 10% in 2010. The average salary for hospital nursing is $53,450 with 3 out of 5 nursing jobs are in the hospital. For home health care, the salary is $49,000. For nursing care facilities, they were the lowest at $48,200.

Training and continuing education

Most home health care nurses gain their education through accredited nursing schools throughout the country with an associate degree in nursing (ADN), a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN), or a master's degree in nursing (MSN). According to the United States Department of Labor, in 2004 there were 674 BSN nursing programs, 846 ADN programs. Also, in 2004, there were 417 master's degree programs, 93 doctoral programs, and 46 joint BSN-doctoral programs. The associate degree program takes 2 to 3 years to complete, while bachelors degrees take 4 years to complete. Nurses can also earn specialized professional certificates online in Geriatric Care or Life Care Planning.

In addition, for those nurses who choose to pursue advancement into administrative positions or research, consulting, and teaching, a bachelor's degree is often essential. A bachelor's degree is also important for becoming a clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners (U.S. Department of Labor, 2004).

All home health care nurses have supervised clinical experience during their training, but as stated earlier advanced practicing nurses hold master's degrees and unlike bachelor and associate degrees, they have a minimum of two years of post clinical experience. Course work includes anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, psychology, and behavioral sciences and liberal arts. Many of these programs have training in nursing homes, public health departments, home health agencies, and ambulatory clinics. (U.S. Dep. of Labor, 2004).

Whether a nurse is training in a hospital, nursing facility, or home care, continuing education is necessary. Health care is changing rapidly and staying abreast with the latest developments enhances patient care and health procedures. Universities, continuing education programs, and internet sites, all offer continuing education. One such organization that provides continuing education is the American Nurses Association (ANA) or through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Conclusion

There are many rewards to becoming a home health care nurse. Some rewards include the relationship with a patient and their family, autonomy, independence, and engaging in critical thinking. The 21st Century brings with it many opportunities and challenges. We must meet these challenges head on - there is an aging baby boomer population, a growing morbidity factor due to increased medical technology and patient care, and the growing shortage in nursing care.

Becoming a home health care nurse today is exciting and an opportunity to make a difference one life at a time. With clinical experience and proper education, a home health care nurse will lead the future of medical care.

Health Management Training Programs

The health field, like all businesses, needs professionals dedicated to correctly organizing and implementing administrative duties. Learning to keep a hospital or other medical clinic running efficiently can be gained through an education in health management. Students have several training options that they can choose from in order to enter a career.

Management positions can be gained by completing a program from the associate's to doctoral level of schooling. Each level of schooling trains students to enter a career as a manager but the level of education earned dictates the position students can enter. This means that someone with an associate's can become a manager inside a local clinic and someone with a master's can become a top-manager inside an organization. The main difference is that an associate's degree gives students the fundamental skills required to be a manager and a master's provides students with advanced knowledge of the industry.

Students that can't dedicate a large amount of time to schooling should consider earning an associate's degree. Programs focus on creating effective leaders that can handle the stresses of the health industry. Some general courses that students may take include:

    * Management Concerns in Health
    * Medical Terminology
    * Public Speaking
    * Management Strategies

All fundamental areas are covered leaving students with the skills to use management procedures and apply them to the finances and regulations within a health facility. Many students go on to complete a bachelor's degree program at a later time.

Gaining broad knowledge in business procedures and health issues can be learned inside a bachelor's degree program. A four-year program that encompasses both aspects of the field provides students with the procedural skills to work with medical care technologies, employees, and patients. Bachelor's degree courses typically include:

    * Accounting
    * Economics
    * Health Law
    * Health Organization and Administration

Leadership abilities and management skills that are crucial to professional work can be gained. Students will be able to oversee large groups, understand health reforms, and manage projects.

To gain the proper skills to be able to work in all areas of the industry students should continue education at the master's degree level. Education at this level teaches students to manage health operations and facilities according to established standards. Coursework may include:

    * Budgeting
    * Strategic Planning
    * Health Information Systems
    * Finance

Students are able to work as administrators and more in nursing homes, health agencies, and hospitals after completing a master's degree program. Coursework will prepare students to assess the needs of a facility and allow them to promptly solve problems and produce solutions for various areas. Further education can be pursued within doctoral study. Education at this level focuses on research oriented procedures to advance the health system.

All accredited training options prepare students to become valuable managers in the health field. To begin education students can determine what level of managing they would like to perform. Once this is established students can enter the appropriate degree level required for their career goal. Students should enroll in a fully accredited program to ensure that they will receive a quality education. Accreditation is provided by agencies like the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools ( www.abhes.org ).

Childhood Obesity: 3 Arguments for Healthy Vending Machines

In the last 30 years, childhood obesity has tripled in the United States, and if no action is taken today's children will be the first generation in recorded history to be less healthy than their parents. Hundreds of lifestyle and culture changes have combined to effect this change, and hundreds of action steps will need to be taken to combat it. One important step should happen in schools. Many children eat two meals a day at school, and many more eat at least one. They deserve the best, and schools are just starting to understand that.

While some districts are completely overhauling their school lunch program - Boulder, Colorado among them - others don't have the resources to make such big changes so fast. Installing healthy vending machines can solve both problems at once: a substantial and immediate change that generates revenue for bigger changes down the road. What's more, healthy vending machines in schools can help students build life-long habits and learn about healthy lifestyles.

Choosing the Right Snacks

Along with hot lunches, most schools offer a number of other snack options to students via vending machines and snack bars. This is to help the school make money, but should such enterprises be done at the cost of student health? Nachos, candy bars, and cookies are hardly fair for lunch, but kids don't know any better; when given the option, they go for what tastes good. Even adults are guilty of that, so no one would expect more self-denial from kids. However, recent brain research suggests that even into the teen years the frontal lobe - the part of the brain that regulates self-control and judgment - is being re-structured and developed. That means it is even harder for young people to resist the urge to have a candy bar than it is for an average adult. Therefore, it is even more critical that responsible grown-ups make important choices for students that will help them eat right now and learn to choose to do so in the future.

A healthy vending machine in the school building is one way to start that process. Filled completely with nutritious options, kids can learn that "healthy" doesn't mean "gross" and can find themselves coming to enjoy the taste and effects of fueling their bodies with something substantial. That is a lesson that will pay dividends for the rest of their lives.

Multi-Media Health Education

Today's youth are a technology generation, and no doubt about it. Texting, gaming, social networking, and YouTubing all comprise the language kids speak, however foreign that language is to parents. To educate them effectively, anyone with a message for students needs to communicate in a way they understand. No one would guess a vending machine could do that.

Some innovative healthy vending machines include LCD screens that come with educational information both on the snacks in the machine and on healthy tips in general. With state-of-the-art technology and bold graphics, these machines market themselves to young people, but instead of deceiving consumers into buying something they don't need, they encourage them to make the best possible choice when it comes to snacking at school.

Generating Profit for Extra-Curricular Activities

The LCD screens also serve as valuable advertisement space that can be sold to augment even more the profit of owning a vending machine. The reason why many schools have soda machines and snack machines in spite of the obvious health concerns is they are so lucrative that administrators feel it is worth the risk of childhood obesity in order to avoid cutting back already tight budgets on opportunities kids need. How much better to retain the profit and encourage student health? In fact, those extra curricular activities that need the funds are often exactly the same ones that get kids exercising and socializing - the ones that teach them how to live healthy lives outside of school as well as in it. Who knew a vending machine could be so powerful?

However valuable such an investment will be, it still might be a hard sell at the beginning. Working with a trusted vending franchise that specializes in health-food machines is important to avoid mistakes that lead to unsuccessful experiences. For instance, if a Snickers bar is sold next to a granola bar, it's rare that a teenager will be able to resist the former. In fact, having unhealthy snacks available at all, even in another machine, will lead to smaller profit margins than if only nutritious options are presented. That's just common sense, remembering the under-developed frontal lobe of adolescents and children. On the other hand, if someone's hungry for a little something and they look into a window that offers pita chips next to vitamin water next to whole grain honey graham sticks, something is bound to look tasty. If a district is interested in going healthy, it's going to be a commitment. The process of throwing out old junk food habits and creating new one may take a while, but it's worth it.

Dentists - Educational Background and Training

Dentists go through a lot of years in college before actually graduating and are able to practice. The amount of time that medical students spend on their education is understandable considering that they are dealing with the health and well being of an individual. Usually, if not always, students who graduate from high school should graduate from a college course with a bachelor's degree before they can apply for a dental school. Many aspiring medical or dental students complete their Bachelor's degree with a course that is somewhat connected to medicine or dentistry. This somehow gives them a background of what they can expect from the dental school. Usually, these degrees take at least four to six years to finish. The goal of dentists all over the world is to promote good oral health. To be able to do this, they need to go through several years of college, dental school and specialty courses if they want to. General practitioners do not need to specialize while specialist can also take on tasks that general practitioners usually do.

Dental College

Before applying for a reputable dental college, the aspiring student should have a Bachelor's degree. Future dentists will benefit more if their Bachelor's degree courses are connected to medicine since these give them a background of thongs to come. Sciences and other related courses are welcomed by most colleges that offer dentistry. There are two basic dental courses, (DDS) Doctor of Dental Surgery and (DMD) Doctor of Dental Medicine. In many cases of accredited colleges, those who take up Bachelor's degrees in sciences and related courses can have some of the subjects credited when they enter dentistry. This helps to lessen their load and the time that they will spend in some courses. Before that, prospective applicants must also present their DAT scores to the colleges of their choice. DAT is the Dental Admissions Test that is a requirement for those who wish to enter dentistry. High scores in this test along with good grades from the Bachelor's degree course related to science can lead to admission.

Courses in general dentistry usually take around four to six years to complete, depending on the performance of aspiring dentists. Included in the course are clinical skills, dental treatment and diagnosis as well as pathology. Externship comes in the fourth year and they are required to do rotation for this. During the fourth year the student can take the National Board Dental Exams to be able to practice this field of medicine. In some places, the exams take place before the fourth year.

Specialization

Specialization can be taken up after the fourth year of general dentistry or after they graduate and pass their Board Exams. Continuing education is an option that many dentists go for after dental school. There are not a lot of specializations in this field of medicine and they include, but are not limited to, pediatrics, orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry and surgery in the oral and maxillofacial areas.

This is a general overview of dentistry before dentists can practice their profession. There may be slight differences for each state or country depending on the requirements.

Three Yoga Asanas and Their Benefits

Let's be honest, when someone thinks of yoga they visualize the postures they see on the cover of a magazine. When a new student enters a Yoga class for the first time, he or she may have a little anxiety about the ability to perform a posture with proper alignment. That said, let's look at the benefits of yoga posturing.

Every pose (asana) in yoga has specific meaning and brings different benefits to the body. In some cases, the pose looks simple but the benefits are extensive. Poses can be quite powerful when performed correctly. According to some yoga experts, performing an asana means striking a balance between movement and stillness and each pose epitomizes a mental attitude. Let's examine three basic asanas and their value to the practitioner.

A personal favorite, Ananda Balasana or happy baby pose, is performed on the back, gripping the inside, outside or big toe of the foot with each corresponding hand. This posture can dramatically reduce lower back pain and discomfort. The hips, buttocks, inner thigh and back are all stretched during this asana. Props, such as a folded blanket, may be used to support the neck if there are neck or knee problems. Ananda Balasana is contraindicated for pregnancy, so students should be advised.

Navasana, or boat pose, strengthens the abdomen, the spine and hip flexors. It also stimulates the kidneys, thyroid, intestines and prostate gland. Practiced regularly, it improves digestion and reduces stress. An important consideration for those new to yoga is that navasana is performed differently than the similar pilates position, with regards to the hip flexors. In Pilates, the focus is in disengaging the hip flexors to tone the abdominal muscles, while navasana engages those muscles.

Savasana, or corpse pose is one of the first poses that beginners learn. It completes most practices and although it looks simple and straightforward, this pose sustains many parts of the body. Full concentration is required to reach a completely motionless mind and body and optimal relaxation. This asana clears the respiratory and circulatory system and relaxes overworked muscles. It reduces stress levels and the skills needed to achieve this state can be called upon by the practitioner during his daily life for reducing anxiety or troubling thoughts.

Yoga is a valuable tool, in that it can be adapted to suit the practitioner in his skill level, interest and area of focus. Encourage your students to include asanas with benefits they desire in their home practice, as well as trying new ones during class.

Slang

Like any language that develops and is actively used, slang is also present in medical terminology. It is not uncommon for someone working in the field of health care to experience or use medical slang. Attention is being called to this issue though, as the general public becomes more aware of what this slang means since it has saturated popular culture. Hospital dramas often feature crude usage of these words, making it a less private form of communication.

Slang often happens in the form of an acronym, and can be problematic if used on patient forms. Medical staff is strongly encouraged to avoid any written use of this slang and to avoid unprofessional usage around patients. Usage of slang on paperwork can lead to the discovery of these coded messages by patients and lead to trouble for a medical facility.

A Basic Introduction to the Trading Mindset

Many people talk about the wonders of trading and how it can best be addressed, but understanding how to determine and identify your entry signals can go a long way in setting the correct path to trading. Therefore, a basic introduction to trading must be in order.

The first goal in trading is for profit, since the penultimate goal for it is to sell for a profit. But take notice that trading is like gambling, where one cannot ascertain or know what exact market forces are at play and what it can ultimately do to spell your trading choices.

Self assurance is another key to your trading success. No one will show you what to do next, you have to plan for yourself, particularly since there are no hard and fast guidelines for this career.

Other people may tell you what to do, and they could be correct for a little while, but please try to remember that the market goes up and down, and trading is about watching the market, analyzing it, and taking action on your own.

Understand and regulate your opportunities and risks.

Many people grabbing opportunities mean that the really great ones disappear.

The random opportunity that will eventually pop up in a trader's career is a crisis in supply. Something has broken off the normal process of supply and demand, dramatically raising the price...and this is a fleeting chance.

Many people will also be chasing these opportunities the same as you do. These may be the regular suppliers, those with surplus stock, or another trader with a source elsewhere.

Wisely judge the risk and do your thing.

Scamming is a job for some, so always be wary of people offering unprincipled deals or tempting offers. Thoroughly read the conditions of a contract, count zeros, and just be cognizant of every possible fine print on documents before signing.

Gambling to win means not letting the house make the rules. The difference between dumb luck and achievement lies in the amount of risk managed. Sometimes you could get a lucky break and at other times not, so risk analysis and management lie at the center of any method that can be considered reliable.

Setbacks happen, and this is a risk in trading, where there are damages and losses. Play at the stakes and risk levels you can afford, don't lay down all your cards and have nothing left to pick up on. Make every effort to understand the market. This will help a lot in figuring out how you could establish the ups and downs of the market you are in.

Each person needs to identify his piece of the pie and the item markets he is interested in.

Trading is a world of compound interest, trials and opportunities. You can invest in buying and selling more items in a single item market, you can pick up when you felt there is a downturn on one item, or you can diversify into other types of items.

The essence of the market is purposeful chaos. This is because the market is the aggregate actions of thousands of people, therefore it cannot be trusted. It will shift on you at the flick of a finger, cancel plans, wipe out profits, render prior knowledge obsolete or even render you flat broke if you don't play your cards right. Patterns change, so don't just rely on it totally. As what the previous point says, one day it could be favorable for you, but that can change the next day, even the next heartbeat. So this is a basic introduction to a trading mindset and this can help you on your way to more profitable gains and planned risks.

Treating Stomach Cancer

A person asked in the forum about his friend who has stomach cancer. He was interested to know how to treat the disease.

Well, you see, to treat this disease you need to know the stage, the spreading, presence of metastases, type of cancer. Otherwise there are many types of treatments.

Some types of treatment considered standard. Others are more experimental and still undergoing research. There are clinical trials tot test new types of the treatment. Information about the trials can be found form National Cancer Institute. Look at NCI [http://www.nci.gov] http://www.rdoctor.com Mayo [http://www.mayoclinic.com/health] NIH MedicineNet http://www.symptomat.com [http://www.meb.uni-bonn.de/cancer.gov/CDR0000271446.htm] http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/ency/stomach_cancer http://www.cancergroup.com http://www.cancerlinksusa.com

Surgery applies to any stage of the stomach cancer.

When surgeon removes a part of the stomach, some lymph nodes, it is named subtotal gastrectomy (gaster=stomach, ectomy=resection or removal). Surgeon may also remove spleen as an organ that also has some immunological function as the lymph nodes. Spleen as well as lymph nodes may contain metastases. Connection of the rest of the digestive tract may be done by Billroth I, Billroth II, Roux -en- Y and some other surgical methods. When disease spreads wider, by removing the stomach as a whole, surgeon performs total gastrectomy. Lymph nodes, lower esophagus, part of small intestine (usually duodenum) and spleen may also go.

If the tumor can not be removed entirely, but the patient still needs to get some food, some palliative procedures are used. Palliative means that they relieve the patient's condition, but do not cure the cancer itself. The procedures include sent placement and electrocautery. Stent usually looks like metal mesh tube that keeps the gut open. It prevents compression form the tumor and allows the food to go below the obstruction. Electrocautery is the procedure with heated instrument. It allows cutting the tumor or stopping bleeding. Laser can also be used for the same purpose. Radiation therapy uses gamma-rays or x-rays to kill cancer cells or sensitize them to other type of treatments. External radiation requires a machine to target the radiation toward the tumor. Internal radiation means the use of radioactive substance that is placed directly into the tumor or nearby. The doctor, who performs this type of procedures, is named radiation oncologist.

Chemotherapy drugs kill the cancer cells or prevent dividing. Doctors perform chemotherapy by mouth by intravenous infusion, or by direct introduction into the spine, organs, abdominal cavity, etc. The procedures are usually done by oncologist.

Chemoradiation combines chemotherapy and radiation. It is also named adjuvant therapy when is done together with surgery.

Immunological therapy uses antibodies or immune cells instructed to kill the tumor.

Treatment of stage 0 gastric cancer is usually surgical Treatment of stage I, II and III of gastric cancer is surgery, chemotherapy and radiation Stage IV Gastric Cancer is surgery, chemotherapy and radiation or palliative therapy and palliative surgery, depending on several factors, that are evaluated by doctors.
